LAUSD follows California’s statewide TK rule: a child is eligible for Transitional Kindergarten in 2026–27 if they turn 4 by September 1, 2026 (birthdays September 2, 2021 – September 1, 2022). TK is free public school — no tuition, no income limit — and LAUSD offers it at most elementary school sites.
How to enroll in LAUSD TK
Find your resident school with the LA Unified Resident Schools Identifier, then complete the online enrollment through the parent portal. Applications for magnet and permit seats open through the eChoices lottery (usually late fall); neighborhood seats are assigned based on your home address. Bring proof of residence, the child’s birth certificate, and immunization records.
